In 2019 after seeing some fantastic festivals across the world create magical wonderlands, awe inspiring structures that they clearly have invested time, energy, money and love into with decorations, aesthetics and overall look of festivals becoming just as important as the line up. We sat down and dreamt up a Land Beyond. We wanted to create a suspension of reality for those precious hours you are inside our festival, as if you have just stepped into another world to party and rave in a Land Beyond.
Armed with our clear vision of what we wanted to achieve we announced Land Beyond Festival a 2 day music festival right on the coast by Brighton Marina. We found a site that was previously unused and nestled away amongst nature. 9 months of continuous planning and preparation went into the event and as a first year festival we only had our line up and our vision to sell to our community of festival goers. As we hadn’t operated the festival before we couldn’t clearly show what we were trying to achieve and festivals are insanely expensive to run (even some sold out festivals can lose money!)
Fortunately, we managed to sell a lot more tickets than we were expecting. The Saturday was close to sold out and the Sunday was already sold out. Located in ’sunny’ Brighton, in the summer (mid June) the site was almost ready when disaster strikes. In the early hours of Saturday morning 80+ mph winds rip open a huge hole in our main stage big top.
Desperation turns into joy
The Saturday was cancelled. Health and safety immediately cancelled the festival and we were absolutely gutted. We notified everybody immediately. We took over all the nightclubs on Brighton seafront so everybody who had already travelled had a party to go to with top quality DJ’s as 5000 people danced away on Brighton seafront all day and night long. Not the day anyone had planned but it was something.
Not wanting to give up on the Sunday of the festival, we worked non stop from 6am Saturday morning to midday Sunday taking down the damaged tent, moving all our decorations and props, moving out the entire stage, sound and lighting and ordered a new big top which came from Glastonbury and arrived in the early hours on Sunday. Incredibly the team managed to get it done and the festival opening was delayed by only 15 minutes whist we carried out final safety checks. We kept everyone informed on social media and shared the same joy and relief, not all was lost. We simply didn’t have time to decorate and put all the props we had specifically made back onto site before opening. We were delighted to just be able to host one day of the festival but it wasn’t the Land Beyond we wanted to it to be… there was always next year to get it right.
We have faced many obstacles in recent years trying to simply host Land Beyond Festival and share our passion, love and vision with our community and festival goers. We were on track for our most successful year ever. Tickets had flown out, Abode one of Europe’s biggest House music brands were hosting some of the worlds very best DJ’s (MK, Sonny Fodera etc) and SuperCharged was hosting the Sunday with the hottest electronic music talent in the UK (Wilkinson, Hybrid Minds, Maribou State etc). We would have sold out 2-4 weeks before the festival. We had staging specifically built, light shows specifically created, bands walking around the site, inflatables that were humongous and needed to be seen to be believed and our vision was finally becoming a reality.
Sadly coronavirus took over the world and our 2020 dream was once again over. We rescheduled for Bank Holiday May 2021. We combined both days into one huge day and added an extra 4th arena which has doubled our capacity to 10000 people. Our incredible festival community helped us maintain over 75% of our tickets which rolled over to 2021, helping keep us afloat and the festival viable.
With no end date this year on the horizon we took the incredibly tough decision to once again postpone Land Beyond. Having been through the cancellations and postponements we already have in such a short time we decided it was best to wait until 2022 where we have 100% confidence we will be allowed to go ahead. It has been an incredibly long and tough road so far, but a battle we are prepared for. We are more determined now more than ever to turn our vision into a reality.
